Bedroom Spruce Up

This is my bedroom.  It needs a little somethin' somethin' if you know what I mean.

I bought the bedding from Target, part of their Shabby Chic collection and I like it.  I chose the paint color a while back and I do not like it.  That can be changed, so try to imagine a nice grey/beige.  I wanted the cool neutral colors to evoke a peaceful space but now I find myself thinking it is just boring and needing some zing.

My gut feeling is that I need to settle on a bright accent color to bring in.  Maybe get a piece of art or a print that is mostly neutral with a splash of the color?  Then add some funky lamps?

The flower next to the bed actually goes nicely, but I'm pretty sure my husband is not going to dig a pink space.

I spent some time digging through Etsy.  Birds seem to strike my fancy, my husband says they weird him out.  Humph.  Here are some I liked.  The lamps were all google shopping.  What do you think?  I'd love some feedback.

  1. Yeah, I'm going to agree with your hubby. The birds are weird. I love your comforter though! Does your bed stay made. I think mine is made once a week!

  2. Ashley, you are funny. Yes, my bed gets made (almost) every day. It never used to, then I started adopting bits and pieces from about 3 years ago. I feel like my whole life is more together when 1- My bed is made and 2- I wake up to a clean kitchen. Those are the two die hard points I have taken to heart.

  3. Your comforter has longer (as opposed to rounder) shapes in it- so I like the top lamp (although the yellow one is pretty!) and the sailing picture is cool- I like the antique-y look it has!

and I also love flylady! I wouldn't say I make my bed, but it's definitely neatened everyday- it makes such a difference to have a clean kitchen and made bed and get rid of clutter! so welcoming ;)

  4. I love the yellow lamp as well. And I am on board to the made bed. I think it makes my hubby happy coming home to a neat little bed. :)

  5. You seem to be choosing oriental style prints and even 2 of the lamps. Try a local oriental market/store. You can find many interesting pieces. Years ago we bought some inexpensive vases we liked and turned them into lamps. They were uniquely ours.- Sally Allan

  6. Hey there, just saw your comment on my blog and wanted to jump over immediately to see what was what! First off, I too am a lover of birds and pink, where my husband, well, is NOT, so I can tooooootally relate to your situation. Second, though I'd love to see more of your space, I think I understand what you're saying and struggle with it myself. You love what you have, but it feels like something is missing, yes?

I think the key is to utilize a pop of something interesting without going overboard or outside the “tone” of the room. Your pieces seem to lean more traditional so I’m not sure a modern lamp (like the first two) would mesh. And though I like the yellow one, it does carry on the floral element from your bedding, something I’m not sure your husband would adore! I actually don’t mind the lamp you currently have, and I think a big art piece (or two or three) over the bed would do the trick. Even photographs blown up super large in black and white would look great. (I know that wouldn’t give you the color you’re looking for, but it would add different texture.) You know, if you didn’t want to spend the money on a new print, something I’ve done in the past is find a piece of fabric I love, stretch it over a large canvas, and tack it into the back. It may sound strange, but I promise it looks amazing. This site sells cool Marimekko fabric by the yard, and also hanging kits, but it’s SO easy to do yourself.

If you still wanted to go the new lamp route, I think it’s important to keep the pattern to a minimum so it doesn’t compete with the prints of bedding or the lines of your headboard. What about a “crystal” base? Target has some great ones on sale right now!

Anyway, those are just my thoughts. I’m sure whatever you decide to do will be incredible. I can’t wait to see the final look!

  7. 2 by Design,

Thank you so much for your comment, I'm honored as I love your blog ;)
We've done the fabric route in another room ( so I don't want to overdo it, but I will keep thinking on these ideas.
Maybe even large black and whites with one color pulled out.

Maybe some more pictures to come later, I will ping your blog if I do!

  8. Ha! Great minds think alike eh? I should've snooped around your blog more before making that suggestion! Sigh. Well, your house looks beautiful and truly, if you find the inspiration you're looking for, please let me know. I just saw that two of the pieces I talked about in the post you saw were featured in House Beautiful (and together no less!) so I know they'll be everrrrywhere. It never fails! Ha.

    Happy Friday to you :)
